Advice From 13 Homeschool Moms

July 15, 2022 | homeschool

I went to a homeschool seminar day this week, and my favorite part (its always my favorite part!) was the mom panel. A group of moms sat up front and opened the floor to any question. One of the best questions asked was this:

What is some of the best homeschool advice you've received?

I wrote down their answers. Some were helpfully practical. Some were incredibly meaningful. Take what you need, leave what you don't, but here's the list:

1. Kids are smart in different ways. Tell them they’re smart. See them as smart.

2. Slow down, look them in the eye, and smile at your child.

3. Homeschool to your oldest kid.

4. Lean into your instincts.

5. It’s ok to do less.

6. You own your curriculum, your curriculum doesn't own you.

7. Plan your school year, then get rid of at least one thing.

8. Get a basket of toys you only use during read aloud.

9. Ownership builds discipline

10. All choices bring consequences.

11. Don’t plan too heavily over the summer.

12. We’re not teaching little kids, we’re training adults.

13. Your homeschooling works if your home works. When in doubt, choose home.

What would you add to the list?!
